Thursday 1/19/12. We pulled anchor at Long Point at 10:00A and headed for Cayo Costa. Cayo Costa is accessible only by boat. It is a popular destination because of Cayo Costa State Park. Between the islands of Cayo Costa and Punta Blanca lays Pelican Bay. The bay is surrounded by mangroves and is pretty well protected. There are about a dozen boats anchored here but, there is plenty of room so it’s not crowded. We actually went back behind a shoal and found plenty of water. This set us away from most of the other boats. They probably didn’t want to try inching their way past the shoal. But this will be home for the next few days so we might as well settle in where it’s comfortable.
A little more than a hundred yards from us is an Osprey nest. Maw and Paw Osprey have been busy coming and going. We haven’t spotted any chicks yet, but it will be fun to keep an eye on the happenings over there. A Gull seems to have taken a liking to the boat. It floated on the lee side for several hours. I’m not sure if he was looking for a handout or just enjoyed being out of the breeze. There have been a few dolphins cruising along the shoreline probably looking for a quick snack. I hope they leave some for us. After all, we have already proven our expertise at catching fish!
